A.J. Velthuizen graduated from Utrecht Art Academy (BA Product+Interior design) in 1994 and from the Design Academy in Eindhoven (MA Industrial Design Research) in 1997. He has worked as a Product designer at his BE9 studio specialised in bio-based design and as a Web designer.

The brand name “be9” is short for “benign” and signifies being harmless, gentle, safe and even favorable.
The logo and corporate ID was designed by Studio Bassa in Culemborg.
